Old habits die hard

Started by: tomplum (12537)

When I was young , my Dad taught me to, never take the last biscuit, cake or sweet because , It is bad manners, My Mum taught me to, never open a new packet of biscuits because. Once they get opened, they soon go..
I still live by these rules today,

So where does the saying "that takes the biscuit" come from ?

The origin of these sayings almost certainly lies in childhood contests where the winner's prize is a cake or biscuit, but modern use of the terms is almost exclusively ironic -- someone "takes the cake" when their conduct is shocking, surprising, or sets a new low in ethics.

Good example above if I may say so. A person or persons answering my posts which I can't read nor want to, I think that is a good example of, taking the biscuit,

When the carers come to sort Yvonne out with her personal care one carer would sit down but the other would stand. I asked her why she was standing and she said in her country women stood until they were invited to sit down. Then I remembered that in the past no one sat down in someones house until invited to do so

Israel's are very upfront so it's not surprising if someone rings the door bell and asks for a cup of tea or a Israeli friend will open the fringe and take out some food and help there self!! even when out you would share what you ordered it just the way it is here.... even at chrishmas dinner friends took left overs home
